About Khao Luang Cave
Khao Luang Cave is one of Thailand's most extraordinary temple experiences — a vast underground chamber inside a limestone hill on the outskirts of Phetchaburi town, where shafts of natural sunlight pour through holes in the cave ceiling to illuminate a collection of Buddha images arranged across the cavern floor. The effect is profoundly atmospheric, with golden rays cutting through the dim cave air to spotlight the serene faces of the statues below.
The cave system consists of several interconnected chambers reached by a steep stairway down from the hilltop. The main chamber is roughly 35 meters high and contains a large reclining Buddha, dozens of seated Buddha images, and several smaller chedis and shrines. The natural light enters through multiple openings in the roof, and the most dramatic lighting occurs in the morning hours between 8:00 AM and 10:30 AM, when concentrated beams shine directly onto the principal Buddha images.
King Rama IV, who had been a monk in Phetchaburi before ascending to the throne, commissioned the installation of many of the Buddha images. The surrounding area includes Khao Wang royal palace hill nearby and the historic town of Phetchaburi, one of Thailand's most underrated destinations with Khmer-era temples and famous dessert shops.
Historical Note
The cave has been a place of worship for centuries. Its development as a major temple site began under King Rama IV (1851-1868), who spent years as a monk in Phetchaburi. He had Buddha images installed and cave paths prepared. King Rama V continued the work. The cave contains royal insignia from both reigns.
