About Koh Tao
Koh Tao is a tiny island that has become the cheapest and most popular place on earth for PADI certification. Tens of thousands of backpackers come annually for Open Water courses priced at levels that undercut virtually every other dive destination globally. The island's coral reefs are accessible, conditions are generally forgiving for beginners, and intense competition among dive schools keeps prices low.
Beyond diving, Koh Tao offers beautiful snorkeling bays (Shark Bay with its blacktip reef sharks and turtles is a highlight), rocky viewpoints, and a social backpacker scene centered on Sairee Beach. Nightlife features beach bars, fire shows, and bucket drinks — more mellow than Koh Phangan but firmly aimed at the 20-something crowd.
Infrastructure is basic with occasional power outages and limited freshwater. Everything costs more because it arrives by boat. The island has a complicated safety reputation due to past incidents, but most visitors have a straightforward experience of diving, snorkeling, and socializing.
Historical Note
Koh Tao (Turtle Island) was named for its turtle-like shape. Previously a political prison island, it developed as a dive destination in the 1990s and now certifies more divers annually than any other location worldwide.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is Koh Tao the cheapest place for PADI?
Yes, consistently. Open Water courses run 8,500-10,000 THB, often including accommodation. Significantly cheaper than most dive destinations.
Is the diving actually good?
For beginners, excellent — calm conditions, abundant marine life, good visibility. For experienced divers, Sail Rock is outstanding. House reefs are good but not world-class.
Is Koh Tao safe?
The vast majority of visitors have no issues. Motorbike accidents are the main safety concern. There have been isolated serious crime incidents. Use common sense, especially at night.
How do I get there?
Most common: fly to Surat Thani, combined bus+boat (5-6 hours). Alternative: night train to Chumphon, ferry (1.5-2 hours). Or ferry from Koh Samui/Phangan.
When is the best diving?
March to September for calmest seas and best visibility up to 30+ meters. October to December can have rough seas.
Can I work remotely?
Internet is inconsistent with power outages. No proper coworking spaces. Better for a dive trip than a work base.
