About Koh Lipe
Koh Lipe is a tiny island roughly 3 km long in the southern Andaman Sea, part of the Tarutao National Marine Park. It sits closer to Langkawi (Malaysia) than to mainland Thailand, giving it a remote, end-of-the-world feeling. The water clarity genuinely rivals the Maldives at a fraction of the cost.
Despite its small size, Koh Lipe has developed rapidly. What was once a quiet Chao Ley sea gypsy village is now packed with resorts, restaurants, dive shops, and bars along Walking Street and Pattaya Beach. In peak season the island can feel overcrowded. Prices are significantly higher than mainland Thailand and infrastructure struggles to keep up with development.
That said, the water quality is exceptional. Snorkeling directly off the beaches reveals coral reefs and tropical fish within meters of shore. Diving around Koh Adang, Koh Rawi, and the outer Tarutao islands is world-class. For pure beach beauty in Thailand, Koh Lipe remains hard to beat.
Historical Note
Koh Lipe was originally home to the Chao Ley (sea gypsy) community. Tourism development began in the 2000s and has accelerated rapidly, transforming the island from a quiet fishing village into a popular beach destination.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is Koh Lipe really like the Maldives?
The water clarity and color genuinely rival the Maldives. However, the island is more developed and crowded than marketing suggests, especially in peak season.
When is the best time to visit?
November to April. November for fewer crowds and deals. March-April for great weather. Avoid Christmas/New Year unless you book far in advance.
Can I visit during monsoon (May-October)?
Most resorts and boat services close. Seas are rough and access is unreliable. Not recommended.
Is it expensive?
For Thailand, yes. Everything must be shipped in by boat. Budget travelers will spend more here than almost anywhere else in the country.
Are there ATMs?
A few, but they charge high fees and sometimes run out of cash. Bring enough Thai Baht from the mainland.
Is the internet good enough to work?
No. Internet is inconsistent at 10-30 Mbps, speeds drop during peak hours, and power outages occur. Not suitable for remote work.
