About Amphawa
Amphawa is the antidote to tourist-oriented floating markets. Located about 80 kilometers southwest of Bangkok in Thailand's smallest province, this canal-side community comes alive on weekends when vendors in wooden boats line the waterway selling grilled seafood, noodles, sweets, and fresh fruit directly from their vessels. Unlike Damnoen Saduak, Amphawa caters primarily to Thai visitors, giving it a more genuine atmosphere.
Traditional wooden shophouses with ornate fretwork line both banks of the canal, many converted into cafes, boutiques, and galleries while retaining their historic character. Eating grilled river prawns while dangling your feet over the water is one of Thailand's most pleasurable weekend experiences.
After dark, longtail boats carry visitors along dark canals where thousands of synchronous fireflies illuminate riverbank trees like living Christmas lights. Beyond the market, Amphawa is the birthplace of Rama II, and the surrounding canals offer temple visits, fruit farm tours, and traditional homestays. It works best as a weekend overnight trip from Bangkok.
Historical Note
Amphawa has been a canal trading community since the Ayutthaya period. It is the birthplace of King Rama II (1767-1824). The floating market tradition was revived in the early 2000s as a cultural preservation initiative.

Frequently Asked Questions
When is the floating market open?
Friday evening (4:00-9:00 PM), Saturday and Sunday (2:00-9:00 PM). Weekdays the market area is mostly closed.
Is Amphawa better than Damnoen Saduak?
For authenticity, yes. Amphawa caters to Thai visitors with better food and a more genuine atmosphere. Damnoen Saduak is more photogenic in the traditional sense but very tourist-oriented.
How do I see fireflies?
Boats depart from the floating market area after dark (7:00-9:00 PM), 60-100 THB per person. Peak season is May-October. No flash photography.
Can I visit as a day trip from Bangkok?
Yes, 1.5-2 hours by car or minivan. Many combine with Mae Klong Railway Market. For fireflies, an overnight stay is recommended.
Is it worth staying overnight?
Yes for fireflies (which require darkness) and enjoying the market without afternoon crowds. Canal-side homestays are atmospheric.
Can I combine Amphawa with Mae Klong?
Absolutely. They are 15 minutes apart. Visit Mae Klong for the morning train, then head to Amphawa for the afternoon/evening market.
