About Ang Thong
Ang Thong is one of the Central Plains' quietest provinces, a compact stretch of rice paddies and river communities that most travelers pass through without stopping. Those who do stop discover a province with a surprisingly rich craft tradition and one genuinely spectacular sight: the enormous golden seated Buddha at Wat Muang, towering 93 metres high and visible from kilometres away.
Ban Bang Sadet is famous for making Thai drums by hand using techniques passed down through generations. Other villages specialise in woven reed mats, basketwork, and traditional dolls. For visitors interested in Thai folk crafts, Ang Thong offers a rare chance to see artisans at work without commercialisation.
The town sits on the Noi River and the flat terrain makes it pleasant for cycling. Ang Thong works best as a half-day or day trip from Ayutthaya (30 minutes away) or as a stopover on a Central Plains road trip. Accommodation is very limited and there is no nightlife beyond the markets.
Historical Note
Ang Thong has been inhabited since the Dvaravati period and was part of the Ayutthaya Kingdom's rice-growing heartland. The name means 'Golden Basin' referencing the fertile flood plains. The giant Buddha at Wat Muang was completed in 2008.
