About Chainat

Chainat is one of Thailand's smallest and quietest provinces, a flat expanse of rice paddies watered by the Chao Phraya River. The provincial capital is a modest town where life revolves around agriculture, the river, and the slow rhythms of the Central Plains. It receives almost no international tourism.

The main attraction is Chainat Bird Park, Thailand's largest open-air aviary housing hundreds of native and exotic bird species. The Chao Phraya Dam is an impressive piece of mid-20th-century engineering controlling water flow to the entire Central Plains irrigation system. Wat Phra Borommathat houses a Dvaravati-era chedi worth seeking out.

Chainat is best visited as a day trip from Nakhon Sawan or Sing Buri, or as a brief stopover on a Central Plains road trip. The surrounding countryside of endless rice fields and small farming villages is the real attraction for those who appreciate Thai agricultural life.

Historical Note

Chainat has ancient roots with Dvaravati-era settlements. The province was part of the Sukhothai and Ayutthaya kingdoms' rice-growing heartland. The Chao Phraya Dam built in 1957 transformed the province's agriculture.
