About Mae Hong Son
Mae Hong Son sits in a narrow valley surrounded by forested mountains near the Myanmar border, connected by some of Thailand's most winding roads. The town grew around Jong Kham lake, whose still waters reflect a pair of Shan-style temples — the town's postcard image, especially when mist rolls through at dawn.
The population is predominantly Shan (Tai Yai), giving the town a distinctly different feel from other Thai cities. Temples feature Burmese-style multi-tiered roofs, the morning market sells Shan food, and Karen, Hmong, Lisu, and Lahu hill tribes live in the surrounding mountains. The Mae Hong Son Loop motorcycle route has made the town more accessible, but it remains remote and quiet.
Mae Hong Son is ideal for travelers who enjoy mountain scenery, cultural diversity, and being at the edge of the map. The remoteness is the point — but it also means limited internet, few amenities, and long travel times. The Poi Sang Long festival in March-April is one of northern Thailand's most spectacular ceremonies.
Historical Note
Established in 1831 as an elephant training camp for Chiang Mai rulers. Shan settlers gave the town its cultural character. It remained extremely isolated until 1960s roads, earning the nickname 'City of Three Mists.'
