About Nakhon Si Thammarat
Nakhon Si Thammarat — often called "Nakhon" by locals — is one of the oldest cities in Thailand and one of the most historically significant places in the Malay Peninsula. For over a thousand years, this was a major center of Srivijaya civilization. Wat Phra Mahathat, whose origins date back over 1,000 years, houses a relic of the Buddha — making it one of the most revered sites in Thai Buddhism.
The city is the birthplace of Nang Talung, the southern Thai shadow puppet tradition, and is known for its distinctive nielloware silverwork. As a tourist destination, the city is virtually unknown to foreign visitors. This means no tourist infrastructure, no English menus, and no concessions to foreign tastes — but also genuine warmth, excellent cheap southern Thai food, and a rich cultural layer.
The food here is genuinely spicy — much hotter than tourist-adapted food elsewhere in Thailand.
Historical Note
One of the most ancient cities on the Malay Peninsula, Nakhon Si Thammarat was a major center of Srivijaya civilization and later became one of the most important Buddhist cities in Southeast Asia. Wat Phra Mahathat dates back over 1,000 years.
