About Railay
Railay (sometimes spelled Rai Leh) is not technically an island, but the sheer limestone cliffs that seal off its landward side make it accessible only by longtail boat, giving it the feel of an exclusive island paradise. The peninsula juts into the Andaman Sea from the Krabi mainland.
Railay West is the postcard beach: a wide crescent of fine white sand bookended by towering karst formations, facing west for spectacular sunsets. Railay East houses most of the budget accommodation and restaurants. Phra Nang Beach, a short walk south, is often cited as one of the most beautiful beaches in the world — a horseshoe of sand beneath dramatic cliffs with a sacred cave shrine.
Rock climbing is Railay's other defining feature. The limestone karsts offer hundreds of bolted sport climbing routes across all difficulty levels. Climbing schools welcome complete beginners and experienced climbers alike.
Tonsai Beach, accessible by jungle trail from Railay East, is the bohemian counterpart — budget bungalows, reggae bars, and climber culture. The contrast between Tonsai's barefoot vibe and Railay West's resort sophistication is one of the peninsula's most charming features.
Historical Note
Railay was a quiet fishing area until Western rock climbers discovered its limestone cliffs in the late 1980s. Tourism development followed through the 1990s, though boat-only access has limited overdevelopment.
