About Phu Kradueng
Phu Kradueng is a bell-shaped sandstone mountain in Loei Province whose flat summit plateau creates a unique highland ecosystem at 1,200 meters — pine forests, grasslands, waterfalls, and cliff-edge viewpoints over the Isan plains. Reaching the top requires a challenging 5.5 km steep trail (plus 3.5 km to the campground), making it Thailand's most famous hiking destination.
The mountain holds almost mythical status among Thai people — climbing Phu Kradueng at least once is considered a rite of passage, especially for university students and young professionals. The summit plateau offers a network of trails to dramatic cliff viewpoints, waterfalls, and flower meadows.
Pha Lom Sak is the iconic viewpoint — a dramatic cliff jutting over the plains where the sunrise is transcendent. Pha Nok Aen provides equally beautiful sunset views. The Merkus pine forests on the plateau are unique in Thailand, and wildflowers bloom spectacularly from November to December.
The park closes entirely from June to September each year for forest and trail recovery. During peak season (December-January), the mountain reaches capacity at 3,000 visitors per day. On cool-season mornings, temperatures drop to 0-5°C and frost covers the grass.
Historical Note
Phu Kradueng was established as a national park in 1962, one of Thailand's first. The mountain has been a pilgrimage for Thai nature lovers for decades, with the challenging climb becoming a cultural rite of passage.

Frequently Asked Questions
How hard is the climb?
Equivalent to climbing about 250 flights of stairs over 5.5 km of rocky trail. Fit people manage it in 3-4 hours. Unfit people take 5-6 hours. Train beforehand.
Is the sunrise at Pha Lom Sak worth waking up at 4 AM?
Yes. It is one of the most beautiful sunrises in Thailand. The cliff drops away below you and mist-filled valleys create an ethereal landscape.
How cold does it get on top?
December-January nights regularly drop to 0-5°C. Frost is common. Sleeping bags are essential, not optional.
Should I hire a porter?
If carrying more than a light pack, absolutely yes. 30 THB/kg is very cheap. Porters carry loads on bamboo poles and practically run up the mountain.
Why does the park close for 4 months?
Heavy monsoon rain makes the trail dangerous, and the closure allows forest and grassland ecosystems to recover from foot traffic.
