About Phu Thap Boek

Phu Thap Boek rises to 1,768 meters above sea level in the Phetchabun mountain range, making it the highest point in Phetchabun province and one of the loftiest accessible peaks in Thailand's lower northern region. The mountain has become one of Thailand's most beloved cool-season destinations.

The signature experience is waking before dawn, stepping out into cold mountain air, and watching the sun rise over an ocean of white mist filling the valleys below. On the best mornings, the mist stretches to the horizon with only surrounding peaks breaking through like islands.

The mountain's other distinctive feature is its cabbage fields. Hmong hill tribe communities have farmed the mountain slopes for decades, and vast terraces of cabbages cascade down the hillsides in geometric patterns. During harvest season (November to January), the bright green rows against red-brown soil create a landscape more like the Scottish Highlands than Southeast Asia.

The road to the summit is steep, winding, and narrow with some sections exceeding 30% grade. Camping at the summit is the quintessential experience — groups set up tents on terraced hillside plots, cook moo kata (Thai BBQ), and enjoy the cold together. During peak weekends, hundreds of colorful tents dot the hillside.

Historical Note

Hmong hill tribe communities have inhabited and farmed the mountain for generations. Tourism developed from the early 2000s as Thai travel media discovered the sea of mist phenomenon. The area remains largely Hmong-managed.
