About Betong

Betong is Thailand's southernmost city, sitting in a mountain valley just 5 km from the Malaysian border. Despite being in the deep south, Betong itself is predominantly Thai-Chinese and has been largely peaceful. In recent years it has become a surprisingly popular domestic tourist destination, boosted by Betong Airport opening in 2022.

The star attraction is the Aiyerweng Sea of Mist viewpoint, where visitors wake before dawn to drive to a mountaintop and watch clouds fill the valley below. The town itself is charming in a quirky way: Chinese shophouses, a giant letterbox landmark, hot springs, a communist-era tunnel museum, and excellent Chinese-Malay fusion food.

Betong feels unlike anywhere else in Thailand. The Chinese cultural influence is strong, the mountain setting brings cool temperatures unusual for southern Thailand, and proximity to Malaysia adds another cultural layer. The famous Betong fried chicken from free-range local chickens is known throughout the country.

Historical Note

Betong developed as a tin-mining and trading town with a predominantly Chinese immigrant population. During the Malayan Emergency, Communist Party of Malaya guerrillas operated from tunnels in the surrounding jungle. The town's multicultural character reflects centuries of Chinese, Malay, and Thai coexistence.
