About Betong
Betong is Thailand's southernmost city, sitting in a mountain valley just 5 km from the Malaysian border. Despite being in the deep south, Betong itself is predominantly Thai-Chinese and has been largely peaceful. In recent years it has become a surprisingly popular domestic tourist destination, boosted by Betong Airport opening in 2022.
The star attraction is the Aiyerweng Sea of Mist viewpoint, where visitors wake before dawn to drive to a mountaintop and watch clouds fill the valley below. The town itself is charming in a quirky way: Chinese shophouses, a giant letterbox landmark, hot springs, a communist-era tunnel museum, and excellent Chinese-Malay fusion food.
Betong feels unlike anywhere else in Thailand. The Chinese cultural influence is strong, the mountain setting brings cool temperatures unusual for southern Thailand, and proximity to Malaysia adds another cultural layer. The famous Betong fried chicken from free-range local chickens is known throughout the country.
Historical Note
Betong developed as a tin-mining and trading town with a predominantly Chinese immigrant population. During the Malayan Emergency, Communist Party of Malaya guerrillas operated from tunnels in the surrounding jungle. The town's multicultural character reflects centuries of Chinese, Malay, and Thai coexistence.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is Betong safe?
Betong itself is generally safe and peaceful, predominantly Thai-Chinese. The main concern is the road from Yala city which passes through more sensitive areas. Flying directly to Betong Airport eliminates this concern.
How do I see the sea of mist?
Go to Aiyerweng viewpoint. Leave Betong at 4-5 AM (hotels arrange transport). Best November to February. Not guaranteed, weather dependent.
Is the airport useful?
Very much so. Before 2022, reaching Betong required a long drive through the deep south. The airport makes it directly accessible from Bangkok in 1.5 hours.
Can I cross to Malaysia?
Yes. The Betong/Pengkalan Hulu crossing is simple. From the Malaysian side you can reach Ipoh (3 hours) and Penang (4-5 hours).
Is Betong's fried chicken really that good?
It is genuinely famous across Thailand. Free-range chickens from the area have a distinct flavor. Multiple restaurants in town serve it.
How long should I stay?
Two nights is ideal: one early morning for the sea of mist, one day for the town's attractions, hot springs, and tunnel.
