About Satun
Satun is one of Thailand's most overlooked provinces, a quiet corner where the Andaman coast meets the Malaysian border. The town itself is a useful transit point rather than a destination, but it has a low-key charm with old shophouses, a riverside mosque, and local markets. Pak Bara, the main pier for island boats, lies about 60 km northwest.
The province is the gateway to some of Thailand's most pristine marine environments. Tarutao National Marine Park, Koh Lipe, Koh Adang, and Koh Bulon all fall within Satun province. The UNESCO-recognized Satun Geopark covers coastal and island areas with 500-million-year-old fossils and karst formations.
Satun is Muslim-majority but notably peaceful, unaffected by the insurgency that impacts the deep south provinces. The Tammalang Pier offers a ferry crossing to Langkawi, Malaysia, making it part of a popular backpacker route. Thale Ban National Park on the Malaysian border provides rainforest, waterfalls, and a scenic lake for those with time to explore beyond the islands.
Historical Note
Satun has historically been influenced by both Thai and Malay cultures, reflecting its position on the border. The province was part of the Malay Sultanate of Kedah before coming under full Siamese administration. Its maritime heritage is tied to fishing and coastal trade along the Andaman Sea.
