About Cha-Am
Cha-Am occupies a long stretch of Gulf of Thailand coastline about 200 kilometers south of Bangkok, sitting in the shadow of its more famous neighbor Hua Hin. While Hua Hin has developed into a polished resort destination, Cha-Am retains its character as a Thai family holiday town where pleasures are simple: a long flat beach, cheap seafood, and weekend barbecues under casuarina pines.
The beach stretches for several kilometers, filling with Thai families on weekends but feeling nearly empty on weekdays. Swimming is safe in the shallow, calm waters. Beach chairs and vendors selling grilled squid and som tam patrol the sand. It is thoroughly, authentically Thai.
Cha-Am's appeal is its normalcy. For international visitors it offers an affordable, authentic alternative to curated coastal destinations, particularly as a base for the cultural attractions of Phetchaburi town and Kaeng Krachan National Park.
Historical Note
Cha-Am developed as a seaside retreat in the early 20th century following construction of the Southern Railway Line. King Rama VI built the Maruekathaiyawan Palace nearby in 1924. The town grew as a domestic tourism destination.

Long, wide, safe with calm water. Good for families. Not powder-white sand or turquoise water. A pleasant, functional beach.
Is Cha-Am good for long stays?
Yes. Low cost of living, safe, decent internet, proximity to Bangkok (2.5 hours). Monthly condo rentals from 8,000 THB.
Do people speak English?
Limited. Hotel staff at mid-range and above usually speak basic English. Street vendors and local restaurants are Thai-only.
When is it busiest?
Thai long weekends, Songkran (April), New Year, and school holidays. The beach transforms from empty to packed.
Can I use Cha-Am as a base for Kaeng Krachan?
Yes. The national park is about 1.5 hours from Cha-Am, feasible as a day trip. For serious wildlife watching, staying inside the park is better.
