About Hua Hin
Hua Hin is a seaside town on the Gulf of Thailand in Prachuap Khiri Khan province, roughly 200 kilometers southwest of Bangkok. Nestled between the sea and the Tenasserim Hills that form the natural border with Myanmar, the town stretches along a broad, curving beach that runs for several kilometers. The name Hua Hin means "stone head," referring to the rocky headland at the southern end of the main beach. Unlike the islands and Andaman coast resorts that cater primarily to international tourists, Hua Hin has always been a distinctly Thai destination, popular with Bangkok families, retirees, and the royal family itself.
The town's history as a resort destination dates to the 1920s when King Rama VI built a seaside palace here, and King Rama VII followed with the beautiful Klai Kangwon Palace, whose name means "far from worries." The arrival of the southern railway line connected Hua Hin directly to Bangkok, and the stunning Art Deco Hua Hin Railway Station became one of the most photographed train stations in Thailand. This royal patronage established Hua Hin as Thailand's first beach resort, and the town retains an air of old-world elegance that sets it apart from flashier coastal destinations. The current King still uses the palace regularly, which contributes to the town's well-maintained roads and public spaces.
Modern Hua Hin operates as both a vacation town and a growing residential community for expatriates and retirees, particularly from Scandinavia, Germany, and the United Kingdom. The town has excellent infrastructure including international hospitals, modern shopping centers, and a wide variety of restaurants ranging from humble seafood stalls to upscale European cuisine. The night market scene is a particular highlight, with the Hua Hin Night Market and Cicada Weekend Market drawing visitors for their outstanding seafood, Thai desserts, and artisan crafts. The surrounding area offers eight championship golf courses, making it Thailand's premier golf destination outside Bangkok.
Hua Hin is ideal for travelers who want beach time without the backpacker party scene, retirees exploring potential long-stay destinations, and anyone seeking easy access to impressive natural areas. Khao Sam Roi Yot National Park, just 45 minutes south, features dramatic limestone peaks, the famous Phraya Nakhon cave temple, and excellent birdwatching. Kaeng Krachan National Park, Thailand's largest, lies to the west. The town is close enough to Bangkok for a weekend trip but rewarding enough for a week or more of exploration.
Historical Note
Hua Hin became Thailand's first beach resort in the 1920s when King Rama VI built a seaside palace, followed by Rama VII's Klai Kangwon Palace in 1929. The southern railway line brought Bangkok's elite to the coast, establishing Hua Hin as a royal retreat. The town has been a favored residence of Thai monarchs ever since.
