About Hang Dong
Hang Dong district sits immediately south of Chiang Mai city, forming a sprawling suburban zone that has become one of the most desirable residential areas in northern Thailand. Its primary claim to fame is Ban Tawai Handicraft Village, a massive complex of workshops and showrooms where artisans produce carved teak furniture, lacquerware, silverwork, and ceramics. Wholesale buyers come from around the world, and individual shoppers find museum-quality pieces at a fraction of what they would cost elsewhere. The surrounding roads are lined with furniture factories stretching for kilometres, making this Southeast Asia's largest concentration of home furnishing shopping.
Royal Park Rajapruek, an 80-hectare botanical garden originally created for a 2006 royal horticultural exposition, features a stunning royal pavilion, themed international gardens, and seasonal flower displays peaking during the cool season. Chiang Mai Night Safari on the slopes of Doi Suthep-Pui offers open-air tram rides through semi-natural animal habitats.
For longer-term visitors, Hang Dong offers a more affordable and spacious lifestyle than central Chiang Mai. Modern housing developments, international schools, golf courses, and excellent cafes along the irrigation canal road have made it popular with expats and professionals. The area combines suburban convenience with quick access to Chiang Mai city centre, just fifteen kilometres north.
Historical Note
Hang Dong has been a trading and agricultural community for centuries. Its woodworking tradition evolved from functional furniture making into the massive decorative arts industry visible today. Ban Tawai formalised as a handicraft centre in the 1990s. Royal Park Rajapruek was built for the 2006 Royal Horticultural Exposition celebrating King Bhumibol's 60th year on the throne.

How big is the furniture shopping area?
Enormous. Ban Tawai village alone has hundreds of shops, and surrounding roads are lined with showrooms for several kilometres. Items range from small decorative pieces to full container-loads for export.
Can I ship furniture internationally?
Yes, very common. Multiple shipping companies within Ban Tawai offer door-to-door container shipping worldwide. Get quotes from at least 2-3 companies.
Is Hang Dong good for long-term stays?
Excellent. It is one of the top expat areas in Chiang Mai with modern condos, houses, international schools, and reliable internet while being cheaper than the city centre.

Good from June through February. March and April are burning season with hazardous smog levels. Many residents leave during this period.
