About Lamphun
Lamphun sits in the Ping River valley between Chiang Mai and the Doi Khun Tan mountain range. As the capital of the ancient Hariphunchai Kingdom founded in 663 AD, it is one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in Thailand. The compact old center is surrounded by remnants of the original moat and earthen walls.
The city is dominated by Wat Phra That Hariphunchai, a stunning 9th-century temple with a 46-meter golden chedi that serves as the spiritual heart of the province. Nearby, the Hariphunchai National Museum houses Mon-era artifacts spanning over a thousand years. The streets are lined with teak shophouses and the pace of life is unhurried.
Modern Lamphun has a small industrial estate on its outskirts but the town center remains deeply traditional. The famous longan fruit orchards surround the city, and the annual Longan Festival in August is the biggest local event. There is almost no tourist infrastructure — few guesthouses, limited English signage, and no nightlife. Lamphun is best for day-trippers from Chiang Mai or travelers wanting a genuine Thai town with extraordinary historical depth.
Historical Note
Lamphun was founded in 663 AD as Hariphunchai, a Mon kingdom predating the Tai peoples by centuries. Queen Chama Thewi was its legendary first ruler. The kingdom fell to King Mangrai of Lanna in 1281.
