About Koh Muk

Koh Muk is a small island off the coast of Trang province best known for the Emerald Cave (Tham Morakot), one of Thailand's most extraordinary natural wonders. To reach it, you swim through a 70-meter pitch-black sea cave tunnel that opens into a hidden beach completely enclosed by towering limestone cliffs, open to the sky. The turquoise water inside the chamber gives the cave its name.

Beyond the cave, Koh Muk is a quiet, predominantly Muslim fishing island with about 1,500 residents. The western side has Sivalai Beach, a narrow strip of sand extending into the sea. The rest of the island is a working fishing village with rubber plantations inland. Development is modest — a handful of resorts on the west coast, simple guesthouses in the village, and not much else.

Koh Muk offers a middle ground between the development of Koh Lanta and the isolation of Koh Bulon. It has enough facilities to be comfortable but remains genuinely local and uncrowded.

Historical Note

Koh Muk has been home to a Muslim fishing community for generations. The Emerald Cave was known to locals long before tourism discovered it. The island remains primarily a fishing community with modest tourism development.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the Emerald Cave worth it?

Absolutely. Swimming through a dark cave tunnel to a hidden cliff-enclosed beach is one of Thailand's most unique experiences. Do not miss it.

Is the cave dangerous?

With a guide, life jacket, and calm seas, it is safe for most people. The 70-meter swim is through total darkness. Do not attempt alone or in rough conditions.

Is there an ATM?

No. Bring all cash from the mainland. Some resorts may accept cards.

How long should I stay?

Two to three nights is ideal. One day for the cave and beach, one for island hopping or relaxing.

When should I visit the cave?

Low tide is best for the easiest swim and largest interior beach. Early morning or late afternoon avoids the mid-morning tour boat crowds.

Is it suitable for families?

The cave requires swimming through darkness, which may scare young children. The beaches are calm and safe. No medical facilities on island.
