About Koh Bulon
Koh Bulon Lae (usually just called Koh Bulon) is a tiny island in the Andaman Sea, about 20 km off the coast of Satun province. At roughly 3 km long and 1 km wide, it is one of Thailand's last genuinely off-grid island experiences. There are no roads, no cars, no ATMs, no 7-Elevens, and very limited electricity (generators run for limited hours, supplemented by solar power). Mobile signal ranges from weak to nonexistent.
The island has a few dozen simple bungalow operations, a small Chao Ley (sea gypsy) village, and pristine white sand beaches with excellent snorkeling directly offshore. Panka Yai Beach on the west side is the main beach — a long crescent of soft white sand. Panka Noi on the north has rocky shores with better snorkeling.
This is an island for people who genuinely want to disconnect. There is nothing to do but swim, snorkel, read, eat, and sleep. If that sounds boring, Koh Bulon is not for you. If that sounds perfect, it might be the best island in Thailand.
Historical Note
Koh Bulon has been home to a small Chao Ley (sea gypsy) community for generations. Tourism development has been minimal and organic, with simple bungalow operations appearing over recent decades. The island remains one of Thailand's least developed inhabited islands.
Best time to visit: November to April (dry season; island closes May to October)
