About Nakhon Pathom

Nakhon Pathom holds a unique place in Thai history as what many scholars believe to be the oldest city in the country and the site where Buddhism first took root in the region. The city is dominated by the massive Phra Pathom Chedi, a 127-metre-tall golden stupa that is the tallest Buddhist monument in the world.

The city has deep Dvaravati-era roots, and the Phra Pathom Chedi National Museum contains an excellent collection of artefacts from this ancient Mon-Buddhist civilisation. Modern Nakhon Pathom is a lively university city — Silpakorn University's main campus is here, giving the town a youthful energy and a better-than-average food scene. The market around the chedi is famous throughout Thailand for its khao lam.

Located just 56 kilometres west of Bangkok, Nakhon Pathom is one of the easiest day trips from the capital, accessible by train, bus, or car in under an hour.

Historical Note

Nakhon Pathom is believed to be the site of the ancient Dvaravati kingdom (6th-11th centuries) and possibly the first place in present-day Thailand where Buddhism was practised. The current massive chedi was rebuilt by King Rama IV in the mid-19th century.
