About Nakhon Phanom

Nakhon Phanom enjoys arguably the most scenic stretch of the Mekong in all of Thailand. The town sits directly on the riverbank, and across the water, the dramatic limestone mountains of Laos rise sharply from the far shore, creating a panorama that is especially spectacular at sunset.

The spiritual heart of the province is Wat Phra That Phanom, located about 50 kilometers south. This Lao-style golden chedi is one of the most important Buddhist sites in Isan. Nakhon Phanom has a distinctive Vietnamese community dating from the early 20th century — Ho Chi Minh himself lived here during his revolutionary years. This Vietnamese influence shows in excellent pho, spring rolls, and banh mi alongside Isan staples, giving the town one of the most interesting food scenes in the northeast.

A Third Thai-Lao Friendship Bridge connects Nakhon Phanom to Tha Khaek in Laos, gateway to the famous Thakhek Loop motorbike route.

Historical Note

The area has been settled since the Khmer period. That Phanom stupa dates back over 2,500 years in legend. The Vietnamese community arrived in the early 1900s fleeing French colonial Indochina. Ho Chi Minh lived here 1928-1931. The Friendship Bridge to Laos opened in 2011.
