About Bueng Kan

Bueng Kan became Thailand's 77th and newest province in 2011, carved from the eastern districts of Nong Khai. This remote stretch of the upper Mekong remains one of the least-visited parts of Thailand, offering genuine off-the-beaten-path experiences.

The undisputed highlight is Wat Phu Tok, a forest monastery built into a sandstone butte with wooden walkways and staircases spiraling through seven levels representing the stages of enlightenment. The views from the top are breathtaking and it remains relatively unknown to international tourists.

The surrounding landscape features sandstone formations like Hin Sam Wan (Three Whales Rock), quiet Mekong villages, and Phu Wua Wildlife Sanctuary with waterfalls. The nearby Red Lotus Sea in Udon Thani province is accessible for the spectacular January-February bloom. English is rarely spoken and independent transport is essential.

Historical Note

Bueng Kan was historically part of Nong Khai province. The area has been inhabited for centuries along the Mekong. It was granted provincial status in 2011, making it Thailand's newest province.
