About Nakhon Ratchasima
Nakhon Ratchasima, universally known as Korat, is the gateway to Thailand's vast northeastern Isan region and the country's largest province by area. Sitting on a plateau roughly 190 metres above sea level, the city marks the geographic and cultural boundary where central Thailand transitions into the Isan heartland. The Friendship Highway runs straight through its centre, connecting Bangkok to Laos and making Korat a natural stopover for travellers heading northeast.
The city's history stretches back centuries. During the Ayutthaya period it served as an important frontier outpost, and its most famous resident is Thao Suranaree, known as Ya Mo, a noblewoman who rallied townspeople to defeat a Lao invasion in 1826. Her monument in the city centre is one of the most actively worshipped shrines in Thailand, surrounded by offerings, dancers, and incense from dawn to dusk. The old city wall and moat remnants can still be traced, though modern Korat has long since expanded well beyond them.
Modern Korat is a sprawling Thai city of malls, markets, universities, and a growing middle class. It does not have the polished tourist infrastructure of Chiang Mai or the beach resort feel of the south. What it does have is authenticity. The night markets sell real Isan food at real Isan prices. The Pad Mee Korat noodle stalls have been perfecting their craft for generations. The city's large student population from Suranaraee University of Technology and Rajamangala University gives it an energetic, youthful feel.
The main draw for most visitors is Khao Yai National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site about an hour southwest of the city. This ancient monsoon forest shelters wild elephants, gibbons, hornbills, and even wild tigers, though sightings are rare. The park's waterfalls, including the dramatic Haew Narok, are spectacular during and just after the rainy season. Surrounding Khao Yai are vineyards, boutique resorts, and the Jim Thompson Farm, which opens seasonally with fields of cosmos flowers that draw hundreds of thousands of Thai visitors.
Northeast of the city lies Phimai Historical Park, an 11th-century Khmer temple complex that predates Angkor Wat and was once connected to it by a direct road. The sandstone prangs and intricate lintels rival anything in Cambodia, yet you might have the entire site to yourself on a weekday morning. Nearby, Prasat Phanomwan and other scattered Khmer ruins dot the countryside.
Korat is ideal for travellers who want to experience a genuine Thai provincial city without the tourist bubble. Prices are low, the food is outstanding, the people are warm, and world-class nature and history are less than an hour away. It is not glamorous, but it is real Thailand.
Historical Note
Nakhon Ratchasima has been a strategic frontier city since the Ayutthaya period, guarding the passage between the central plains and the Khorat Plateau. It became nationally famous after Thao Suranaree (Ya Mo) led the defence against a Lao invasion in 1826, and her monument remains the city's spiritual heart. In the modern era, the Friendship Highway transformed Korat into Isan's commercial capital and Thailand's gateway to the northeast.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is Nakhon Ratchasima worth visiting?
Yes, especially if you want to experience a real Thai city without tourists. The main attractions — Khao Yai National Park and Phimai ruins — are world-class, and the food scene is excellent and extremely affordable.
How do I get from Korat to Khao Yai National Park?
The park entrance is about 80km from the city. Rent a car or motorbike, take a bus to Pak Chong then a songthaew, or book a day tour. Having your own transport is highly recommended as the park is large.
Do people speak English in Korat?
Very little English is spoken outside upscale hotels and malls. A translation app is essential. Basic Thai phrases will be greatly appreciated and very helpful.
What is Pad Mee Korat and how is it different from Pad Thai?
Pad Mee Korat uses thinner rice noodles with a darker, tangier sauce made from chili paste and tamarind. It has a more robust, less sweet flavour than pad thai and is considered Korat's signature dish.
Is Korat safe for tourists?
Yes, Korat is very safe. It is a normal Thai provincial city with low crime rates. Standard precautions apply — watch your belongings in crowded markets and be careful on roads.
How long should I spend in Korat?
Two to three days is ideal — one day for the city and Phimai, one to two days for Khao Yai. If you are a nature lover, Khao Yai alone deserves two to three days.
Is there a high-speed train to Korat?
The Bangkok-Nakhon Ratchasima high-speed rail line (part of the Thailand-China railway) has been under construction. As of 2025, regular trains take 3-5 hours. Check current schedules as the line progresses.
What is the best time of year to visit Khao Yai?
November to February for comfortable hiking temperatures and good wildlife sighting conditions. June to October has the most impressive waterfalls. March to May is very hot. Avoid weekends and Thai holidays when the park is crowded.
