About Pak Chong
Situated where the Korat Plateau meets the Dong Phaya Yen mountain range, Pak Chong is less a destination in itself and more the essential base for exploring Khao Yai National Park, home to wild elephants, hornbills, gibbons, and waterfalls in one of Southeast Asia's most biodiverse forests. The town itself is a sprawling market town along the highway, with the usual collection of fresh markets, noodle shops, and convenience stores.
The surrounding countryside has transformed into an upscale resort and agritourism zone. Thai and international vineyards — GranMonte and PB Valley Khao Yai — produce surprisingly good New Latitude wines. Organic farms, lavender fields, Italian-themed shopping villages, and glamping resorts cater primarily to Bangkok weekenders. The area offers a curious blend of genuine wilderness (inside the park) and manicured leisure (outside it).
At 350 meters elevation, temperatures are noticeably cooler than Bangkok, especially during the November-February cool season when nights can be genuinely chilly. Khao Yai was Thailand's first national park, established in 1962, and was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2005 as part of the Dong Phaya Yen-Khao Yai forest complex.
For most visitors, the strip of resorts, restaurants, and attractions along Thanarat Road — the main road from Pak Chong to the park entrance — is where they spend their time. Pak Chong town itself is cheaper and more authentic, but the Thanarat Road experience is what Bangkok weekenders come for.
Historical Note
Pak Chong developed as a railway town on the line connecting Bangkok to the Korat Plateau, sitting at the strategically important pass through the mountain range. Khao Yai National Park was established in 1962 as Thailand's first national park, and Pak Chong grew as the primary service town for park visitors. The wine industry began in the 1990s with experimental vineyards that proved surprisingly viable at this latitude.
