About Saraburi

Saraburi straddles the transition between the flat Central Plains and the Korat Plateau, giving it more varied geography than most neighbours. The city itself is practical and industrial, with cement factories dominating the economy, but the province contains some of the most accessible natural attractions within easy reach of Bangkok.

The spiritual heart is Wat Phra Phutthabat, about 25 kilometres from the city centre. This temple complex houses what is believed to be a footprint of the Buddha, and it has been one of Thailand's most important pilgrimage sites for centuries. The temple's annual fair draws hundreds of thousands of devotees.

The Muak Lek area northeast of the city is where nature takes over. Namtok Chet Sao Noi National Park contains scenic waterfalls particularly beautiful during and after the rainy season. Sunflower fields bloom in November and December, overlapping with Lop Buri's famous fields. The Pasak Chonlasit Dam offers pleasant reservoir views.

Saraburi town is not a tourist destination in itself — it is a working Thai city with malls and markets but little charm. Its value lies in proximity to Bangkok under two hours away, making it feasible as a day trip, and in the natural and spiritual attractions throughout the province.

Historical Note

Saraburi has been settled since the Dvaravati period and was an important waypoint from Ayutthaya to the northeast. The Buddha footprint at Wat Phra Phutthabat was reportedly discovered during King Songtham's reign in the early 17th century. The city grew significantly in the 20th century with industrialisation, particularly the cement industry exploiting local limestone deposits.
