About Phayao
Phayao stretches along the western shore of Kwan Phayao, a large freshwater lake that dominates the town's identity. In the cool season, the lake reflects the surrounding mountains and mist hangs over the water at dawn, creating scenes of genuine beauty. The lakeside promenade is the town's social hub, where locals jog, eat, and watch the sunset with the silhouettes of mountains across the water.
The town was once the seat of the Phayao Kingdom, a Tai state that allied with Lanna and Sukhothai in the famous 1287 pact. The most remarkable remnant of this past lies beneath the lake itself — Wat Tilok Aram, a submerged temple whose ruins are occasionally visible when water levels drop. On shore, Wat Si Khom Kham houses Phra Chao Ton Luang, one of the largest and most revered Chiang Saen-style Buddha images in northern Thailand.
Modern Phayao is a small, quiet provincial capital. The University of Phayao on the outskirts brings some student energy, but the town center feels frozen in a quieter era. There are a handful of lakeside restaurants, a small night market, and very few guesthouses oriented toward foreign visitors. Menus are mostly Thai-only and English is rare.
Phayao is ideal for travelers seeking genuine tranquility and lake scenery without any tourist infrastructure. It makes a good stopover between Chiang Rai and Nan or a contemplative retreat for those who enjoy quiet places. The surrounding mountains hide some of northern Thailand's best sea-of-mist viewpoints, including Phu Lang Ka, reachable only by motorbike on winding mountain roads.
Historical Note
The Phayao Kingdom was founded by King Ngam Muang in the 13th century and was one of three allied Tai kingdoms (with Lanna and Sukhothai) that formed a legendary pact in 1287. The kingdom was later absorbed into Lanna and then came under Burmese control before being incorporated into Siam. Kwan Phayao lake was formed when the Ing River was dammed in 1939, submerging Wat Tilok Aram and other structures.
