About Sangkhlaburi
Sangkhlaburi sits at the edge of Thailand, near the Myanmar border at the Three Pagodas Pass, in a landscape of forested mountains and the vast Vajiralongkorn Reservoir. It is one of the most ethnically diverse places in Thailand — Thai, Mon, Karen, and Burmese communities live side by side, each maintaining distinct traditions, languages, and temples. This cultural richness, combined with dramatic mountain scenery, makes Sangkhlaburi one of Thailand's most rewarding off-the-beaten-path destinations.
The town's iconic landmark is the Mon Bridge (Saphan Mon), a 400-meter wooden bridge that stretches across the reservoir connecting the Thai town to the Mon village on the other side. It is the longest hand-built wooden bridge in Thailand and, at dawn and dusk when monks cross in their saffron robes and mist rises from the water, one of the most photogenic scenes in the country.
During the dry season, when water levels drop in the reservoir, the haunting remains of Wat Sam Prasop (an old temple submerged when the dam was built in the 1980s) emerge from the lake. The half-submerged chedi has become one of the most photographed sights in western Thailand.
Getting to Sangkhlaburi requires commitment — it is a 4-5 hour drive from Kanchanaburi town or 7-8 hours from Bangkok, with the last stretch winding through mountains. This remoteness keeps visitor numbers low and preserves the town's authentic character.
Historical Note
The area has been inhabited by Mon and Karen peoples for centuries. The modern town was established after the Vajiralongkorn Dam was built in 1984, which flooded the original settlements and created the reservoir. The Mon Bridge was built by the Mon community in the 1980s to connect their relocated village to the Thai town.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is Sangkhlaburi worth the long journey?
If you are interested in authentic Thai culture beyond beaches and temples, absolutely. The Mon Bridge at dawn, the multicultural markets, and the scenery are exceptional. It is not for everyone — there is no beach, no nightlife, and limited English.
Can I cross into Myanmar?
Day passes have historically been available at the Three Pagodas Pass border. Regulations change frequently — check current status before planning.
How long should I stay?
2-3 nights is ideal. This gives time for the bridge at dawn, a boat tour, a market morning, and exploration of the surrounding area.
When can I see the sunken temple?
The submerged temple is most visible in March-May when water levels are lowest. During the rainy season it may be completely underwater.
Is it cold at night?
From November to January, nighttime temperatures can drop to 10-15°C. Bring warm clothing — most accommodations do not have heating.
