About Surin
Surin sits in lower Isan near the Cambodian border, where Thai, Khmer, and Suay (Kui) cultures intertwine. For most of the year it is a sleepy provincial town that few tourists visit. Each November, the Surin Elephant Roundup transforms the city as hundreds of elephants and mahouts converge for parades, demonstrations, and cultural performances.
The Suay people of Ban Ta Klang have been elephant keepers for centuries, and this tradition remains central to provincial identity despite evolving animal welfare practices. Prasat Sikhoraphum, a beautifully restored 12th-century Khmer temple, is one of the best-preserved in the region. Ban Tha Sawang village produces intricate mud-mee silk, and visitors can watch weaving and buy directly from artisans at village prices.
The city itself is small and functional with good markets and cheap food. Outside of November, Surin appeals to those interested in Khmer heritage, traditional crafts, or experiencing deep Isan culture at bargain prices.
Historical Note
Surin was historically part of the Khmer Empire, retaining significant cultural influence. The Suay people developed a unique tradition of capturing and training wild elephants. Surin became a formal province in 1786. The first Elephant Roundup was organized in 1960 and has since become one of Thailand's most famous festivals.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is Surin worth visiting outside the Elephant Roundup?
For most travelers, the Roundup is the main draw. Outside November, Surin appeals to those interested in Khmer ruins, silk weaving, or deep Isan immersion.
How do I get tickets for the Elephant Roundup?
Tickets for the stadium show are sold through TAT and local vendors. Grandstand seats sell out; buy early.
Is the elephant village ethical?
Ban Ta Klang is evolving. Some operators offer ethical, observation-based experiences; others still offer rides. Research specific operators.
Can I buy silk directly from weavers?
Yes. Ban Tha Sawang village (10 km from city) sells silk directly at significantly lower prices than Bangkok shops.
Do I need a car?
Recommended for ruins and elephant village. The city itself is walkable.
Can I combine Surin with Buriram?
Yes. Buriram is about 1.5 hours west. A lower Isan road trip covering Buriram, Surin, Si Sa Ket, and Ubon works well.
