About Surin

Surin sits in lower Isan near the Cambodian border, where Thai, Khmer, and Suay (Kui) cultures intertwine. For most of the year it is a sleepy provincial town that few tourists visit. Each November, the Surin Elephant Roundup transforms the city as hundreds of elephants and mahouts converge for parades, demonstrations, and cultural performances.

The Suay people of Ban Ta Klang have been elephant keepers for centuries, and this tradition remains central to provincial identity despite evolving animal welfare practices. Prasat Sikhoraphum, a beautifully restored 12th-century Khmer temple, is one of the best-preserved in the region. Ban Tha Sawang village produces intricate mud-mee silk, and visitors can watch weaving and buy directly from artisans at village prices.

The city itself is small and functional with good markets and cheap food. Outside of November, Surin appeals to those interested in Khmer heritage, traditional crafts, or experiencing deep Isan culture at bargain prices.

Historical Note

Surin was historically part of the Khmer Empire, retaining significant cultural influence. The Suay people developed a unique tradition of capturing and training wild elephants. Surin became a formal province in 1786. The first Elephant Roundup was organized in 1960 and has since become one of Thailand's most famous festivals.
