About Buriram
Buriram defies the typical quiet Isan profile. This small provincial capital hosts international motorsport events at the Chang International Circuit and packs its modern Thunder Castle stadium for Thai League football. But the deeper treasure is Prasat Hin Phanom Rung, a breathtaking 10th-13th century Khmer temple perched atop an extinct volcano, rivaling Angkor in grandeur if not scale.
The processional walkway, naga bridges, and central sanctuary are among the finest Khmer architecture in Thailand. Twice a year (around April 3-5 and September 7-9), the sun aligns perfectly through all fifteen doorways. The city itself is functional and cheap with good food markets. The nearby Prasat Muang Tam with its baray pools reflecting the ruins makes an excellent companion visit.
For a lower Isan road trip, Buriram connects naturally with Korat, Surin, and Si Sa Ket for a circuit of Khmer temples and Isan culture.
Historical Note
Buriram was part of the Khmer Empire from the 9th to 13th centuries. Phanom Rung was built as a Hindu complex dedicated to Shiva, later incorporating Buddhist elements. In the 2010s, Buriram transformed into a sports tourism destination with the Chang International Circuit (2014).
