About Golden Triangle
The Golden Triangle marks the geographical point where Thailand, Laos, and Myanmar converge at the meeting of the Mekong and Ruak rivers. For decades this region was infamous as the world's largest opium-producing zone, controlled by drug warlords. Today the Thai side centres on the small village of Sop Ruak, transformed into a peaceful tourist area with viewpoints, museums, and souvenir stalls.
From the Thai riverbank you can see Myanmar's casino zone across the Ruak River and Laos across the Mekong. The Hall of Opium museum, run by the Mae Fah Luang Foundation, provides genuinely excellent context on the global opium trade and is one of northern Thailand's best museums. Longtail boat trips cruise the Mekong with brief stops at a small Lao island market.
The nearby ancient Lanna city of Chiang Saen, ten kilometres south, offers atmospheric ruins, a national museum, and a more authentic atmosphere than touristy Sop Ruak. Most visitors come for a half-day as part of a Chiang Rai trip, but those who linger discover a quiet riverside area with genuine depth beneath the trinket stalls. Ultra-luxury resorts like the Anantara and Four Seasons dot the surrounding hillsides, offering world-class accommodation in a remote setting.
Historical Note
The Golden Triangle was once the world's largest opium-producing region, a lawless borderland where drug warlords controlled vast territories. Thailand successfully eradicated opium production through royal crop substitution programmes. The area is now a peaceful tourist zone, though Myanmar's Shan State across the river remains associated with drug production.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is the Golden Triangle worth visiting?
For 2-3 hours, yes. The viewpoint, Hall of Opium, and a boat trip make a satisfying half-day stop, usually combined with Mae Sai or Chiang Saen on a day trip from Chiang Rai.
Is there still opium production here?
On the Thai side, no. Thailand eradicated opium production through crop substitution programmes. Myanmar across the river still has drug production, though it has shifted to methamphetamine.
Can I cross to Laos from here?
Not officially. Boat trips to Don Sao island are a grey-area brief landing. The official crossing to Laos is at Chiang Khong, 60 km east.
Should I stay in Sop Ruak or Chiang Saen?
Chiang Saen is more interesting and affordable, with ruins, a morning market, and authentic character. Sop Ruak is a tourist stop, not a place to stay overnight.
What is Kings Romans on the Lao side?
A Chinese-run Special Economic Zone with casinos and a reputation for lawlessness. Visible from the Thai side but not recommended to visit.
How do I get here from Chiang Rai?
Blue songthaew from Chiang Rai bus station to Chiang Saen (1.5 hours, 40-60 THB), then a short ride to Sop Ruak. Day tours from Chiang Rai are also common.
