About Nong Khai
Nong Khai sits directly on the Mekong River, facing Vientiane just 25 kilometers across the water. The First Thai-Lao Friendship Bridge, completed in 1994, makes it one of Thailand's most important border crossings, and the town has long been a gateway for travelers heading to or from Laos. But Nong Khai deserves exploration in its own right, not just as a transit stop.
The star attraction is Sala Kaew Ku, a bizarre and magnificent sculpture park created by mystic shaman Luang Pu Bunleua Sulilat. It contains over 200 massive concrete sculptures depicting Hindu and Buddhist mythology — giant nagas, multi-armed Vishnu figures, and a towering seven-headed serpent. The sculptures are strange, beautiful, and unlike anything else in Thailand.
The Mekong promenade is the heart of Nong Khai's social life. In the evenings, food stalls set up along the walkway while locals and visitors stroll with the lights of Laos twinkling across the water. The town's weekend market, Tha Sadet, sells goods from both Thailand and Laos. Nearby Wat Pho Chai houses the Luang Pho Phra Sai Buddha image, one of the most sacred in Isan.
For longer stays, Nong Khai offers an appealingly slow pace of life at rock-bottom prices. A small but established expat community, mostly retirees, has settled here for the climate, the Mekong views, and the cost of living. Udon Thani's international airport is 55 km away, and a shuttle train now crosses the Friendship Bridge into Laos, connecting onward to the Laos-China railway.
Historical Note
Nong Khai was established in 1827 as a military outpost during the reign of King Rama III to guard the Mekong frontier against Lao and Vietnamese threats. It has been a border trading town ever since, with deep cultural ties to Laos. The Friendship Bridge, opened in 1994, transformed it into Thailand's primary land gateway to Vientiane.
