About Prachuap Khiri Khan
Prachuap Khiri Khan is Thailand at its most gently beautiful. The provincial capital — not to be confused with its famous northern neighbor Hua Hin — is a sleepy coastal town with a stunning bay, a hilltop temple guarded by langur monkeys, and an air force base beach that ranks among the prettiest in the country.
The town sits where Thailand narrows to just 13 kilometers between the Gulf of Thailand and the Myanmar border, creating a dramatic landscape of limestone hills dropping to turquoise bays. Ao Manao (Lime Bay) is technically an air force base beach but is open to the public — a crescent of sand backed by forested limestone cliffs with no development in sight.
South of town, Khao Sam Roi Yot National Park protects a surreal landscape of 300 limestone peaks rising from coastal marshes, with the famous Phraya Nakhon Cave hidden inside — a royal pavilion built inside an enormous cave with a collapsed roof allowing sunlight to illuminate the structure.
Prachuap Khiri Khan is the Thailand that travel writers dream about but cannot find anymore — genuine, beautiful, and unbothered.
Historical Note
Prachuap Khiri Khan served as a coastal settlement for centuries. During World War II, the Japanese invasion landed here in December 1941, and the town's air force base was the site of fierce fighting. The date is commemorated annually.
