About Khao Kho
Khao Kho is a mountain plateau in Phetchabun Province that has earned the nickname "Thailand's Switzerland" for its rolling green hills, cool climate, morning mists, and wildflower meadows. Once a remote Communist insurgency battleground in the 1970s-80s, it has transformed into one of Thailand's most popular domestic tourist destinations — though it remains almost completely off the foreign tourist radar.
The area features wind turbine farms, flower gardens (tulips, salvias, celosias), mountaintop temples, and an explosion of Instagram-friendly cafes and glamping resorts. On cool mornings from November to February, the valleys fill with a spectacular sea of clouds visible from multiple viewpoints. Wat Pha Sorn Kaew, with its five-tier white Buddha statues and millions of mosaic ceramic tiles, is one of Thailand's most photogenic temples.
The crowd skews Thai domestic tourists — couples on romantic getaways and families visiting for cool-weather selfies. You may be the only foreigner at most attractions. Menus and signs are often Thai-only. A motorbike or car is essential as there is no public transport on the mountain.
Historical Note
Khao Kho was a remote Communist insurgency battleground in the 1970s-80s. The Khao Kho Historical Battlefield museum preserves this history. After the insurgency ended, the area gradually developed into a domestic tourism destination centered on its cool climate and mountain scenery.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why is it called Thailand's Switzerland?
The rolling green hills, cool climate, and morning mist give a superficial resemblance to Swiss scenery — by Thai standards. It's a marketing name. Don't expect actual Alpine landscapes.
Do I need a car or motorbike?
Yes, there is no public transport on the mountain. Motorbike or car rental from Phetchabun is the only practical option.
When is the best time for the sea of clouds?
November to January at dawn. Arrive at viewpoints by 5:30 AM. High humidity plus cool temperatures equals best conditions.
How cold does it get?
Khao Kho center: 5-15°C on cold mornings November to January. Phu Tub Berk can reach 0-3°C.
Is it worth visiting for foreign tourists?
If you enjoy off-the-beaten-path Thai culture, spectacular viewpoints, and don't mind limited English, absolutely. Wat Pha Sorn Kaew alone is worth the trip.
