About Phu Ruea

Phu Ruea ("Boat Mountain," named for its shape resembling an upturned boat) holds the record for the coldest temperature ever recorded in Thailand at -1.4°C. Unlike Phu Kradueng, which requires a grueling multi-hour climb, Phu Ruea is accessible by car — you can drive almost to the summit.

This makes it popular with Thai families and older visitors who want mountain scenery and cold weather without the physical challenge. The park features sandstone cliffs with panoramic views, pine forests, and during the cool season, a spectacular display of wildflowers including Siam tulips and wild orchids.

The surrounding area has developed a thriving scene of themed resorts and cafes catering to Thai domestic tourists. The Chateau de Loei winery produces highland wines and has a tasting room. Strawberry and macadamia farms offer pick-your-own experiences in December to February.

The summit viewpoint looks out over the Loei highlands, with frost possible on the coldest mornings in December and January. The Pha Sap Thai cliff is one of the park's most dramatic sunrise spots.

Historical Note

Phu Ruea was established as a national park in 1979. The mountain recorded Thailand's coldest temperature of -1.4°C in January 1974, earning it the reputation as the country's coldest spot.
