About Khao Lak
Khao Lak is a long, quiet stretch of Andaman coast that serves as the primary departure point for liveaboard dive trips and day trips to the Similan Islands, one of Thailand's premier dive destinations. The area was devastated by the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami — the Police Boat 813 memorial, an inland-carried patrol boat, stands as a sobering reminder.
Since then, Khao Lak has been carefully rebuilt as a low-rise, relaxed beach resort destination that deliberately positions itself as the anti-Phuket: no high-rises, no nightlife strip, no go-go bars. The result is a long coastal road lined with mid-range resorts, dive shops, restaurants, and small shopping plazas spread across several beach areas (Nang Thong, Bang Niang, Khuk Khak).
The crowd skews older and more European than the backpacker destinations further south — German and Scandinavian package tourists are a significant presence. During the May-October monsoon, much of the town shuts down and the beaches face dangerous currents. This is firmly a seasonal destination.
Historical Note
Khao Lak was devastated by the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami, which killed over 4,000 people in the area. The rebuilt infrastructure incorporates warning systems and tsunami evacuation routes. The Police Boat 813 memorial preserves a patrol boat carried 2km inland by the wave.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Khao Lak worth visiting outside dive season?
Not really. Most businesses close, beaches have dangerous currents, and the Similans are inaccessible.
Is Khao Lak better than Phuket?
Different. Khao Lak is quieter, more relaxed, and better for diving access. Phuket has more nightlife, dining, and shopping.
How far is Phuket Airport?
About 80 km south, or 1-1.5 hours by road.
Is there nightlife?
Very little. A few bars along the Nang Thong strip. This is a go-to-bed-early kind of place.
