About Takua Pa
Takua Pa is one of those Thai towns that time has mostly forgotten. Once prosperous from tin mining that attracted Chinese, Malay, and Portuguese traders, it is now a quiet district town with a charming old quarter of peeling but atmospheric shophouses. The Sunday walking street has become a modest attraction, drawing Thai visitors for local food, handicrafts, and lantern-lit shophouse ambiance.
The town functions as a local market centre and an alternative base for accessing the Similan Islands, roughly equidistant from Tab Lamu pier as Khao Lak but much cheaper and more authentic. There are almost no foreign visitors outside Sunday evenings.
For travelers interested in small-town Thai life, faded colonial architecture, and a completely untouristy Andaman coast experience, Takua Pa offers a genuine stop. It will not fill more than a day or two, but for those passing through, it rewards a visit.
Historical Note
Takua Pa was a major tin mining centre from the 18th to 20th centuries, attracting Chinese and Malay workers whose wealth built the shophouses surviving today. The town may also have connections to ancient Indian Ocean trade routes. Mining declined in the late 20th century and the town quieted.
