About Phang Nga
Phang Nga province contains one of the most photographed seascapes in Southeast Asia — Phang Nga Bay, where hundreds of limestone karst islands rise dramatically from emerald-green water. The most famous of these is Khao Phing Kan, better known as James Bond Island after appearing in "The Man with the Golden Gun" (1974). Most tourists visit the bay on day trips from Phuket, but the town of Phang Nga itself — the quiet provincial capital — is almost completely ignored.
It is a small, authentic Thai town nestled among limestone cliffs, with a pleasant atmosphere, cheap food, and virtually no foreign visitors. Staying in Phang Nga town rather than Phuket puts you much closer to the bay and allows you to explore it without the tour-bus crush. Bay tours leaving from the Phang Nga pier reach the karst landscape in 20-30 minutes compared to over an hour from most Phuket piers.
The province also encompasses Khao Lak (farther north along the Andaman coast), the Similan Islands access, and quiet inland areas of waterfalls and cave temples. For travelers who want to experience Phang Nga Bay without the Phuket markup, and who appreciate small-town Thai life, the town makes an excellent and very affordable base.
The town itself has little to detain you beyond a night — a market, a few temples, and some local restaurants. But the surrounding countryside is spectacular. Limestone cliffs tower over the town on all sides, cave temples like Suwankuha (Monkey Cave) offer reclining Buddhas in dramatic settings, and small waterfalls like Sa Nang Manora provide cool forest escapes.
Historical Note
Phang Nga was historically a tin-mining area and a stop on the maritime trade route between India and the Malay world. The modern town developed primarily in the 19th and 20th centuries. Phang Nga Bay was declared a marine national park (Ao Phang Nga) in 1981, and tourism accelerated after James Bond filming popularized the landscape worldwide.

Frequently Asked Questions
Should I visit Phang Nga Bay from Phuket or Phang Nga town?
From Phang Nga town if you want cheaper tours, fewer crowds, and a shorter boat ride. From Phuket if convenience and booking ease matter more.
Is James Bond Island worth it?
It is undeniably photogenic but very crowded with tour groups. The bay itself — the karsts, caves, and kayaking — is the real attraction.
How long should I stay?
One to two nights. A full bay tour takes a day, and the town is pleasant for an evening.
Is kayaking better than a longtail tour?
Kayaking is more intimate and lets you enter sea caves and hongs that boats cannot. Highly recommended.
Is the Muslim fishing village worth visiting?
Yes. Koh Panyi is unique — an entire community built on stilts over the sea.
Can I visit Phang Nga Bay independently?
You can hire a longtail at the pier, but it is expensive for one person. Group tours are much better value.
