About Nong Bua Lamphu

Nong Bua Lamphu was carved from Udon Thani province in 1993 and remains one of Thailand's least-known provinces. Situated in the western edge of Isan where the plains begin to rise toward the mountains of Loei, the province combines flat rice-growing lowlands with forested hills that harbor waterfalls, caves, and wildlife.

The province's most impressive attraction is Tham Erawan (Erawan Cave), a massive cave system containing a large three-headed elephant stalactite formation. The cave is considered sacred, with Buddha images inside. The surrounding hills offer hiking opportunities with viewpoints and forest trails.

Nong Bua Lamphu town is small and functional, best visited as a day trip from Udon Thani (60 km) or as a stopover between Udon Thani and Loei. For independent travelers with their own transport, the forested hills offer genuinely peaceful exploration away from any tourist crowds.

Historical Note

Separated from Udon Thani province in 1993. The region has been settled since prehistoric times. During the communist insurgency era (1960s-1980s), the forested hills harbored resistance groups. The name comes from a lotus pond (nong bua) and a local tree species (lamphu).
