About Loei
Loei stands apart from the rest of Isan thanks to its mountainous terrain and cooler climate. Nestled in the western reaches of the northeast, the province shares a border with Laos along the Mekong River and features some of Thailand's most rewarding national parks. Phu Kradueng, the flat-topped mountain requiring a challenging 9 km hike to its summit plateau, is one of Thailand's most iconic trekking destinations.
The provincial capital is a quiet, unassuming town that serves as a gateway to surrounding natural attractions. Most visitors pass through on their way to Chiang Khan, a beautifully preserved wooden shophouse town on the Mekong where morning alms-giving, cycling the riverside promenade, and watching sunrise over Laos have become beloved rituals.
Loei's most famous cultural event is the Phi Ta Khon festival in Dan Sai, held around June or July. Often called the Thai ghost festival, it features colorfully masked processions and raucous celebrations. The province also produces some of Thailand's best cotton weaving and, surprisingly, wine from its cooler highland vineyards.
Historical Note
Loei was a remote frontier region, part of the Lan Xang kingdom before Siamese control. Established as a province in 1907, it records both Thailand's hottest and coldest temperatures.
