About Phitsanulok
Phitsanulok is the largest city in the lower northern region, sitting on the banks of the Nan River at the crossroads of routes heading to Sukhothai, Chiang Mai, and the northeast. It functions as a genuine Thai city rather than a tourist town — there is a university (Naresuan University), a military base, busy markets, and a riverside promenade with night food stalls.
The city's star attraction is Wat Phra Si Rattana Mahathat, locally called Wat Yai, which houses the Phra Phuttha Chinnarat — widely considered the most beautiful Buddha image in Thailand. The bronze, Sukhothai-period figure draws Thai pilgrims from across the country, and replicas of it appear in temples nationwide. The wat complex is genuinely impressive and well-maintained.
The Nan River defines the city's character. Houseboats once lined its banks, and while most have been removed, the riverside remains the social center with an excellent night market and floating restaurants. The flying vegetable show — where chefs toss stir-fried morning glory through the air to waiting plates — is a local spectacle. The Sergeant Major Thawee Folk Museum, a private collection of traditional Thai farming tools and rural artifacts, is one of Thailand's best small museums.
Phitsanulok is an excellent base for visiting Sukhothai Historical Park (60 km west) and Si Satchanalai Historical Park (130 km northwest). It has significantly better accommodation, dining, and transport options than Sukhothai town itself. For travelers, it serves well as a 1-2 night base; for longer stays, it offers an authentic Thai city experience with reasonable internet and amenities.
Historical Note
Phitsanulok was an important city during the Sukhothai and Ayutthaya periods, serving as a secondary capital. King Naresuan the Great, one of Thailand's most celebrated monarchs, was born here in 1555. The city was heavily damaged by fire in 1955, which destroyed most historical buildings except Wat Yai, giving the modern city its largely post-1955 appearance.
