About Chiang Khong
Chiang Khong stretches along the west bank of the Mekong River, looking across at the Lao town of Huay Xai. For years it was the principal crossing point for travelers taking the famous two-day slow boat down the Mekong to Luang Prabang. While the Fourth Thai-Lao Friendship Bridge (opened 2013) moved border formalities 10 km south, the town retains its traveler-friendly atmosphere.
The town itself is small and pleasant rather than spectacular. A riverside promenade offers views across to Laos, a small morning market serves local food, and a few temples dot the town. The real draw is the Mekong — wide, brown, and slow-moving, with Lao mountains beyond. In the evenings, riverside restaurants serve grilled fish and cold beer while the sun sets over the water.
Chiang Khong has a slightly more developed guesthouse scene than other towns its size, thanks to the steady flow of travelers heading to or from Laos. The town is ideal as a transit stop for the Laos slow boat route, or as a quiet base for exploring the upper Mekong region. It pairs well with Chiang Saen and Mae Sai for a Golden Triangle circuit.
Historical Note
Chiang Khong was historically a small Lanna settlement on the Mekong, serving as a river crossing and trading point. The giant Mekong catfish (pla buek) was traditionally caught nearby, though catches have declined drastically. The Fourth Thai-Lao Friendship Bridge opened in 2013.
