About Mae Sai

Mae Sai is the northernmost point of mainland Thailand, separated from Myanmar's Tachileik by the narrow Sai River and a friendship bridge. The main street runs straight to the crossing, lined with shops selling gems, jade, lacquerware, and imported goods from Myanmar and China.

The border market atmosphere gives Mae Sai an energy most small Thai towns lack. Beyond border commerce, Mae Sai serves as a launching point for the Golden Triangle region — Chiang Saen and the Mekong are 30 minutes east, and the Doi Tung Royal Project is 20 minutes south. The Tham Luang cave, famous from the 2018 rescue of 12 boys and their coach, is nearby.

Mae Sai is best as a day trip from Chiang Rai or a brief stopover while touring the Golden Triangle circuit. The town itself is a functional commercial center rather than a scenic destination.

Historical Note

Mae Sai has been a border trading point for centuries connecting Shan States with Lanna kingdoms. The town gained international attention in 2018 when 12 boys were rescued from nearby Tham Luang cave.
