About Chiang Saen

Chiang Saen sits on the banks of the Mekong River in Thailand's far north, a quiet town of perhaps 12,000 people that was once the seat of a powerful Lanna kingdom. The old city walls and moat are still partially intact, and scattered ruins of ancient temples dot the landscape between modern houses and rice paddies.

The town's location on the Mekong gives it a frontier character. Across the wide brown river lies Laos, and on clear days the mountains of Myanmar are visible upstream. Chinese cargo boats dock at the river port, bringing goods from Yunnan province, giving the town an unexpectedly international trading feel despite its small size.

Just 9 km north, Sop Ruak marks the official Golden Triangle where Thailand, Laos, and Myanmar meet. While Sop Ruak is the tourist stop with viewing platforms and the Opium Museum, Chiang Saen is the more authentic and atmospheric base. The Chiang Saen National Museum houses fine Lanna and Chiang Saen-style Buddha images. Chiang Saen appeals to history enthusiasts and travelers who enjoy quiet Mekong River towns with minimal tourist infrastructure.

Historical Note

Founded in 1328 by Saen Phu, grandson of King Mangrai. The Chiang Saen style of Buddha image became one of northern Thailand's most important artistic traditions. The city was repeatedly fought over and finally destroyed in 1804 before being resettled in the late 19th century.
