About Chiang Khan
Perched on the banks of the Mekong River in Loei province, Chiang Khan is one of Thailand's most photogenic small towns. Two parallel streets of restored wooden shophouses form the heart of the town, with Soi 1 through Soi 20 running perpendicular between them. The lower street faces the Mekong and Laos on the opposite bank, while the upper Chai Khong Road becomes a lively walking street each evening with food stalls, handicrafts, and live music.
Chiang Khan has become enormously popular with Thai domestic tourists, especially during the cool season when morning mist hangs over the Mekong and temperatures can drop to 10-15 degrees Celsius. The town retains its traditional character with morning alms-giving to monks, old-fashioned cafes, and a slow rhythm of life. International tourists are still relatively few, making it an authentic Thai getaway rather than a foreign tourist hub.
The town's distinctive wooden shophouse architecture dates from the early-to-mid 20th century. Beginning around 2010, Thai social media discovered its photogenic charm, triggering a domestic tourism boom. The town has since been carefully developed to preserve its wooden heritage while accommodating visitors, making it one of Thailand's best examples of heritage tourism done well.
Historical Note
Chiang Khan has roots as a small Mekong trading settlement with cultural connections to Laos. Its wooden shophouse architecture dates from the early-to-mid 20th century. Thai travel bloggers discovered it around 2010, triggering a domestic tourism boom.
