About Phrae
Phrae lies in the Yom River valley, surrounded by forested mountains in the eastern reaches of what was once the Lanna Kingdom. It is one of Thailand's most undervisited provincial capitals despite having some of the finest traditional teak architecture in the country.
The old town, enclosed by remnants of a rectangular moat, contains ornate teak mansions dating to the late 19th and early 20th centuries when the teak logging industry made Phrae wealthy. Vongburi House and Khum Chao Luang are the star attractions — beautifully restored mansions open to visitors. The town's temples blend Lanna and Shan architectural styles, reflecting the mix of peoples who settled here during the teak boom.
Outside town, Phae Muang Phi is a striking geological formation of eroded soil pillars resembling a ghost forest, giving it its name (Ghost Land). The surrounding countryside is lush with teak forests and rice paddies, and the province is known for its indigo-dyed mo hom cloth — the traditional blue farmer's shirt of northern Thailand. The village of Ban Thung Hong is the center of this handicraft.
Phrae has almost no tourist infrastructure. There are a handful of guesthouses, no hostels, and few restaurants with English menus. This is a town for travelers who want to see Thai life as it is, without any packaging for outsiders. Long-term stays are possible but solitary — there is no expat community.
Historical Note
Phrae was a semi-independent Lanna mueang (city-state) that paid tribute to various powers including Sukhothai, Ayutthaya, Burma, and eventually Lanna. The teak logging boom of the late 1800s brought significant wealth and the construction of the grand mansions visible today. The city was formally integrated into the Thai administrative system in the early 20th century.
